3.2-Liter Engines: BMW produced a couple of 3.2-liter engines within the S52 and S54 engine classes which are performance classifications for engines based originally on the BMW M52 and M54 engine classifications. These engines both had a cast-iron block with an aluminum dual overhead cam (DOHC) cylinder head.

• S52B32 - This 3.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine was used in the 1996-1999 BMW M3 and the 1998-2000 BMW Z3 M. It is equipped with variable valve timing (VVT) and has a compression ratio of 10.5:1 to ultimately produce approximately 240 hp.
  
  
• S54B32 - As the replacement of the S52B32 engine, it received an electronic throttle control unit, a better oil pump, a Siemens MSS ECU, new cams, and a higher compression ratio of 11.5:1. This engine was rated at approximately 315-338 hp and was used in the 2000-2006 BMW M3, 2000-2002 BMW Z3 M, and the 2006-2008 BMW Z4 M.
